CHAPTER ELEVEN

Friday afternoon, the wind had whipped up so much that Gaga heard the outside door open and close; not so much the door, but the difference between the loud wind and then the silence once the door closed again.

She didn’t give it much thought until she remembered Nene had run upstairs for a moment. Gaga jumped up and rushed out to the store area, ready to apologize to any waiting customer. However, the store was empty. She was about to turn back toward the office when something on the display case counter caught her eye. Upon further examination she realized it was a box of chocolate; a pricy one at that.

A small card was attached that read, ‘so sweet are you, and so much missed’. Gaga wasn’t by nature a suspicious person, but she was old enough to be careful. She turned the box over and then opened it. No surprise; it was a very nice variety of chocolates,

Gaga shrugged her shoulders, tossed the box into the garbage bin, and went back into the office. As she did, she saw near the cash register an order form. Nene had taken a cake order. Gaga wasn’t sure how she felt about it.

They’d put the kitchen in so they could bake and sell cakes, but so far hadn’t done that. She was surprised Nene hadn’t mentioned the order. She looked at the slip of paper. It was for six sheet cakes, so nothing elaborate. Just narrow and oblong, with white frosting and some decoration at one end.

When Nene returned from upstairs, she saw that Gaga was looking at the order form. “I took that order this morning,” she said, “I can fill it if you don’t want to? I thought it would be fun.”

“We can’t both be in the kitchen,” Gaga said, “someone has to watch the bakery.”

“Beanie said she’d take customers here while we cooked.”

“Beanie did?”

Nene laughed, “don’t look so surprised. She could see how excited I was, so volunteered.”

“Okay. Well, you can probably do this on your own, but if you need help just knock on the wall.”

Nene headed back to the door, “will do,” she said over her shoulder.

After a few minutes, Gaga once again could tell the front door had opened and closed. She was beginning to wonder if they should put a sensor of some sort at the bakery entrance, this way she’d know if a customer has arrived, or it was just Jack coming in the front door.

As it was, there was no sensor, so she had to go out and look to make sure a customer wasn’t waiting. Again, nobody was there.

However, like before, something had been left on the counter; this time it was a sunflower. Fresh, blooming, long-stemmed, and very pretty. Gaga rushed out from behind the counter and hurried to the building’s front door; she looked outside hoping to see who had left the flower, but the sidewalk was empty.

She went back behind the counter and picked up the flower. That’s when she noticed a tiny clock tied to its base.
